The four measurements that make a fit classic
Fit words are vague until you put numbers behind them. Four measurements decide whether a trouser is classic, and all four are on a size chart if you look for them.
The rise is the distance from the crotch seam to the top of the waistband. A classic rise sits at or just below the natural waist, which is higher than most people expect and is the single reason classic fit trousers look composed when relaxed ones do not. The thigh is measured across the leg an inch below the crotch, and classic allows a few centimetres of ease there and no more. The knee carries roughly the same width as the thigh minus a small reduction, which is what produces the straight line. The hem opening finishes close to the knee measurement, wide enough to clear a shoe.
The practical version of all that: lay a trouser you already own and like flat on a bed, measure the thigh and the hem opening, and compare those two numbers to the size chart. Classic fit is not tailored, and it is not relaxed
Tailored fit starts from the classic pattern and removes ease in specific places. The thigh comes in, the taper below the knee gets stronger, and the hem narrows. The waist does not change, which is the part people miss. A tailored trouser is not a smaller trouser.
Relaxed fit goes the other direction and adds width through the seat and thigh while keeping the waist fitted. The extra room sits where you move rather than where the trouser holds on.
Classic sits between them, and the gap on either side is smaller than the words suggest. A few centimetres through the thigh is the whole difference. What classic fit should do when you sit down
Standing still, most trousers look fine. The test is what happens when you move.
Sit down in a classic fit trouser and the fabric across the thigh should travel with you rather than stretch flat against the leg. Stand up and it should fall back into a straight line without needing a tug at the knee. Cross your legs and the hem should ride up and come back down. If any of those three fail, the pattern was drafted for a body shape that is not yours, or the fabric has no recovery in it.
That second failure is the common one. A classic pattern cut in a fabric that stretches but does not return will hold its shape for an hour and then sag at the knee and seat. By evening the trouser is a size larger than the one you bought, and no amount of correct measurement fixes it. Recovery, not stretch, is the property that matters.
Where the waist should sit
Classic fit puts the waistband at or just under the natural waist, which is roughly at the navel for most people. Worn there, the rise is doing its job and the seat hangs correctly. Worn lower, the crotch drops, the thigh measurement stops lining up with your actual thigh, and a classic fit starts behaving like a badly cut relaxed one.
This is worth checking before you decide a pair does not fit. A lot of trousers that get returned as too loose in the leg were simply being worn two inches below where the pattern expects the waist to be.
Office to weekend, and what that asks of the fabric
Classic fit is the cut people buy when they want one trouser to cover more than one kind of day. That is a reasonable expectation of a pattern and an unreasonable one of most fabrics. A rigid woven holds a line and creases at the hip the moment you sit. A soft knit is comfortable and loses its shape by lunch.
