Why the inside matters more than the thickness
Warmth comes from trapped air. A brushed face or a looped face holds a thin layer of air against your body, and that layer does the insulating. A thick, flat knit adds weight and shape without adding heat in the same proportion, which is why a sweatshirt can feel warm and still hang cleanly.
You can check this yourself. Turn the sweatshirt inside out. A brushed inside feels soft and slightly raised, and a loop-back inside shows small loops. A flat, smooth inside holds very little air.
