A quarter zip should sit close through the shoulder and chest, with the shoulder seam landing on your shoulder point and room for exactly one layer underneath. The collar should stand without gripping your neck when zipped, the hem should finish at your hip bone, and the cuffs should reach your wrist without riding up when you lift your arms. Looser than that and it reads as a sweatshirt with a zip in it; tighter and it pulls across the back the moment you reach for something.
Where the shoulder seam should sit
The shoulder is the seam that decides whether a layer looks deliberate or borrowed. On a correctly sized one, the seam sits on your shoulder point, the small bony ridge at the outer edge of your shoulder, or within a centimetre of it. That placement is what keeps the sleeve hanging straight down the arm instead of collapsing into folds at the bicep.
This is the main thing separating a quarter zip from a hoodie or an oversized tee, both of which are usually cut with the seam dropped well past the shoulder point on purpose. An outer layer sits under a jacket and over a tee, so it needs a defined shoulder line to do that without bunching. If you want the longer version, our guide to the fit types COZY cuts walks through slim, regular, relaxed and oversized and what each one does to the shoulder.
Check it flat rather than in the mirror. Lay the garment down, measure shoulder seam to shoulder seam across the back, and compare that number against a top you already wear well. Two centimetres either side is fine. Five is not.
How much room you need through the chest and body
Enough to pinch two to three centimetres of fabric at the side seam with the zip closed, and no more. That is the working number for a layer. Less than that and the garment reads as a base layer rather than something worn over one. More and the extra width gathers at the waist as soon as you sit down.
Room through the body is doing a specific job here. It has to clear whatever is underneath, which for most people is a t-shirt and occasionally a polo collar. It does not need to clear a second sweatshirt, because almost nobody wears one that way. Garments cut very generously through the body are usually cut that way to reduce returns rather than because the fit is better.
The COZY Quarter Zip is tailored through the shoulder with room to layer, which is the balance worth looking for. Our comparison of oversized, relaxed and true to size covers how the same amount of ease reads completely differently depending on where the pattern puts it.
Sleeve length, hem and the collar
The cuff should reach your wrist bone and stay there when you raise your arm. These pieces are usually finished with a ribbed cuff, so a sleeve slightly long at rest is not a problem. A sleeve that pulls back to mid-forearm when you reach forward is.
The hem should land at your hip bone or just below it. Higher and it rides up over a tee every time you move. Lower and it starts to read as a sweatshirt, which changes the proportion of everything below it.
The collar is the part most people misjudge. Zipped fully, it should stand on its own and leave enough space to slide a finger between fabric and throat. A collar that presses on the neck at full zip gets abandoned at half zip within a week, which means you have effectively bought a different garment.
How fabric changes the way a quarter zip fits
Two garments cut from the same pattern in different knits do not fit the same way. This is the part a size chart cannot tell you.
Studio Terry is a looped knit. It holds warmth without bulk, stays breathable, and has enough give that a close cut still moves with you. The COZY Ladies Quarter Zip is knit in Studio Terry with a loop-back face on the inside, so it sits nearer the body without feeling restrictive, which is what lets it work for training and for wearing open over a tee.
COZY Scuba is a double-knit in cotton, polyester and Lycra. It is smoother and more structured, and it holds a defined line rather than draping. The COZY Quarter Zip uses it, which is why the same nominal fit reads more tailored through the shoulder and takes a blazer over it without looking crumpled.
There is a third variable that no product page usually accounts for, which is what the garment measures after it has been washed. COZY makes its clothes in-house in Karachi and pre-washes its fabric before cutting. COZY fabrics do not shrink. A layer that tightens half a size in the wash stops being a layer, because the room you left for a tee underneath is the first thing to go.
Should you size up to layer?
Usually not. These are already patterned as outer layers, so the room is built into the cut rather than into the size. Taking a size up mostly adds length to the sleeve and width at the hem, neither of which is where you wanted the space.
Size up only if you intend to wear it over a hoodie, or if you want the boxier look on purpose. Size down if you plan to wear it zipped as a standalone top and want it close. Everyone else should take their usual size and check the two numbers that actually matter, shoulder-to-shoulder and chest width, measured flat against something they already own.

If your measurements fall between two sizes, take the larger one. That is a different decision from sizing up to layer, which adds room in the sleeve and hem rather than where you need it.
The same logic runs through most layering pieces. COZY's unisex hoodies and quarter zips are cut to be shared across a household for exactly this reason, and our breakdown of classic fit against relaxed and tailored covers how the same decision plays out on bottoms.
Shoulder on the point, one layer of room, hem at the hip, and a collar that stands without gripping. Four checks, and a product page stops being a guess. The Winter Collection carries both COZY quarter zips, one in Studio Terry and one in COZY Scuba, so you can compare the two fits side by side before you commit. Every COZY piece ships with a free string bag.
